How to choose the right paint sheen

Alright so you chose the color for your living room, now it’s time to select a finish.   There are several options for you to choose from eggshell, satin, matte, flat, semi-gloss or high gloss

There is no right answer on what sheen to choose, it’s really a personal preference.  However there are a few guidelines that can help in your decision.
First rule of thumb: Typically walls are duller and the trim is shinier.

High-Gloss: a gloss finish is great for highlighting features like doors and trim.  A glossy finish is brighter and reflects the most light which is why it is typically used on architectural finishes like a fireplace or doors and trim.

Semi-Gloss:  This is another good choice for trim because it does reflect a good amount of light.  The most common place you may find a Semi-Gloss paint is on bathroom and kitchen walls as well as trim.   Semi-Gloss is durable, easy to clean which is another reason it’s an ideal choice for kitchen, bathrooms and even cabinetry
Satin and Eggshell:  These are great for interior walls and are the most popular choice for hallways and bedrooms.   These finishes are durable which makes it an ideal finish for high traffic areas that require frequent cleaning.  Finger prints and other scuffs can be wiped off with a wet rag.   Both Eggshell and Satin are low luster and often used as decorative finishes.

Flat and Matte:  Each is a great option for interior walls.  Both finishes have a low luster and create a very sophisticated look on ceilings and walls.   The finishes are not as durable which is why they are not recommended for kitchens, bathrooms or children's areas.
